End of Semester One

School Holidays
You may wish to revise some of the following concepts over the holidays to support our learning from Semester One. We wish all our families a safe and enjoyable holiday with their children. The children are on holiday break from Monday 8th July and Term 3 will resume on Tuesday 23rd July.
English
Handwriting - This term the children have been participating in handwriting lessons, focusing on the formation and positioning of upper and lower case letters.
Adjectives - adjectives are words that describe a noun. The children have been adding adjectives to sentences to make them sound more interesting.
i.e. The spider was in the web. Add an adjective = The black spider was in the web.  


Sight Words - We continue to revise all introduced sight words including reading, Golden, Red, Blue and Green words.  The children are expected to read these words in isolation and are now beginning to recognise them with in sentences.
Phonics - We have focused this term on letter blends. A blend is two sounds that blend together, you can hear both sounds. The children are expected to read words by blending these sounds together.
i.e.  bl-a-b,   bl-o-b,    sl-u-g,     pl-u-g

Numeracy
Number Stories - we have started to learning about simple addition and subtraction number stories within 10. Children use counters to represent the items stated in the number story. They are then asked to draw a picture to represent the number story, before writing it as a sum.
Doubles - We have also been learning about Doubles Facts i.e. double 1 is 2, double 2 is 4, and double 3 is 6 etc.
 

Days of the Week - The children have enjoyed learning the days of the week, ask them to sing you the song (it’s sure to get stuck in your head.)
Revising numbers 1-20 - Children are encouraged to read, write and count aloud numbers to 20. They are also encouraged to recognise numbers that come before or after a given number.


Keepsake Books
Student Reports and Keepsake Books went home on Thursday.  We ask that you return the Keepsake Books in Week 1, Term 3 as we will continue to use them during Semester Two.

In Literacy We are revising the single sounds V, P, and J and have started to read the red words an, has and as. We are writing simple sentences using the sight words look, dad, in and like. The students should be able to read all the golden sight words and begin to include them in their writing. We are building our vocabulary in using the words for the parts of our body. Our Big Talk discussion is about playing games. Please ensure guided reading books are being returned on Mondays and Thursdays as other groups will need the books.  Students who do not return their books will not receive another one until it is returned. A reminder that Library Day is Monday, your child should place their library books in their library bag in the green box on Mondays. What We've Been Learning About...

We have had a very busy last few weeks with swimming lessons, dancing lessons and hot weather! Swimming Lessons We would like to thank all the parents for your organisation and preparation in ensuring the children were ready for swimming each day. There is a lot involved in getting ready for swimming, traveling on the bus and participating in the lessons. The students’ behaviour was exceptional. It was great to see the students’ confidence in the water and their swimming skills develop over the two weeks. Hills Christmas Thank you to all the parents who have donated to the Hills Christmas Appeal. It is wonderful that we are able to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Coming Up There are many activities planned for the last couple of weeks of term. Final Assembly There is a whole school assembly on Friday 13th December.  It is the last assembly for 2019.
