Welcome to the Room 6 blog.
Welcome to Pre-primary 2019.  We are so excited to be working alongside you and your child this year.  Pre-primary is a very exciting year.  The growth and progress that is made is truly remarkable  especially in the student’s reading and writing abilities.  It is wonderful to watch as they learn and try new experiences.  I’m sure you will be amazed at what your child will achieve over the coming year.

We have had a busy start to the school year.  It has been great to see the children settling into the routines of school life.  Establishing familiar routines early on will help to foster a safe, happy and positive learning environment for all. 
 
A big part of Pre-primary is working together as a whole class as well as in small groups.  This term, a large emphasis will be placed on developing appropriate and positive social skills to work together cooperatively.  We will be doing lots of class building activities to help create a cohesive learning environment.


The Playground

We have noticed a few children playing on the playground before and after school.  The playground area is for use at recess and lunch time only. If arriving before 8.30am, our school policy is to wait outside the K/PP classrooms until the bell rings.


Library
We visit the school Library on Monday afternoons.  Each child needs to bring a library bag to borrow a book.  This can then be exchanged for another book the following week.  Visiting the library is a wonderful opportunity to stimulate a love of reading with your child.  It may be nice to share some time together in the evenings or on the weekend reading the story.  Reading to your child will help them to develop their language and listening skills and, motivate them to improve their own reading ability.  It also assists in expanding their imagination and knowledge. Borrowing books teaches children to value these resources and be responsible. Remember to keep this experience enjoyable and have fun engaging in the conversations.  Happy reading! 


Sight Word Folders
Sight Word Folders are coming home this week and they will be checked weekly.  We have colour coded the return days below. 
 

Red Folders = Monday

Yellow Folders = Tuesday

Green Folders = Wednesday

Purple Folders = Thursday


Blue Folders =  Fridays

What we've been learning about...

In Literacy We are revising the single sounds V, P, and J and have started to read the red words an, has and as. We are writing simple sentences using the sight words look, dad, in and like. The students should be able to read all the golden sight words and begin to include them in their writing. We are building our vocabulary in using the words for the parts of our body. Our Big Talk discussion is about playing games. Please ensure guided reading books are being returned on Mondays and Thursdays as other groups will need the books.  Students who do not return their books will not receive another one until it is returned. A reminder that Library Day is Monday, your child should place their library books in their library bag in the green box on Mondays. What We've Been Learning About...

We have had a very busy last few weeks with swimming lessons, dancing lessons and hot weather! Swimming Lessons We would like to thank all the parents for your organisation and preparation in ensuring the children were ready for swimming each day. There is a lot involved in getting ready for swimming, traveling on the bus and participating in the lessons. The students’ behaviour was exceptional. It was great to see the students’ confidence in the water and their swimming skills develop over the two weeks. Hills Christmas Thank you to all the parents who have donated to the Hills Christmas Appeal. It is wonderful that we are able to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Coming Up There are many activities planned for the last couple of weeks of term. Final Assembly There is a whole school assembly on Friday 13th December.  It is the last assembly for 2019. End of Semester One

School Holidays You may wish to revise some of the following concepts over the holidays to support our learning from Semester One. We wish all our families a safe and enjoyable holiday with their children. The children are on holiday break from Monday 8th July and Term 3 will resume on Tuesday 23rd July. English Handwriting - This term the children have been participating in handwriting lessons, focusing on the formation and positioning of upper and lower case letters. Adjectives - adjectives are words that describe a noun. The children have been adding adjectives to sentences to make them sound more interesting. i.e. The spider was in the web. Add an adjective = The black spider was in the web.    Sight Words - We continue to revise all introduced sight words including reading, Golden, Red, Blue and Green words.   The children are expected to read these words in isolation and are now beginning to recognise them with in sentences.
